1. Big Brew will be on Saturday May 7 behind MDHB. Contact Chris Anderson if you plan to brew – there is room for more brewers. Food will be brats, sauerkraut, veggie burgers, pizzas, plus whatever folks bring.

2. The Guild summer picnic will be on Saturday June 4, noon to dusk, at Piney Run Park in Sykesville, pavilion #4.

3. Annapolis Homebrew Club’s Pints 4 Paws will be on Saturday June 11 from 2 to 6 PM at the Navy Stadium. They’d like more brewers to serve beer. See https://www.facebook.com/PintsforPaws for more info.

4. HomebrewCon will take place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh on June 23-25. See https://www.homebrewcon.org/ for details. We plan to participate in Club Night on Friday and serve beer at Social Club on Saturday. Register by April 23 for a discount. There are several hotels stumbling distance from the venue. 5. MASHOUT will take happen August 18-21.

7. Entries for FOAM’s Battle of the Bubbles are due by May 13, with judging on May 15 and 17. Olde Mother will brew the Best Of Show winner. The club’s Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/FOAM.Homebrew.Club/ but no info about this event has been posted.

8. This month’s competition was pale and malty lagers. There were 9 entries. Winners were:

  • 2nd (tie) – John Jester
  • 2nd (tie) – Trevor Rose

9. Next meeting: Wednesday May 18. Competition will be same-grain-and-same-hop. Here are the rules:

  • Must use the exact grain & hop bill
  • Smoking or roasting of grain is not permitted
  • No other adjuncts can be added (finings & enzymes ok)
  • Any yeast can be used
  • Ingredients can be scaled up or down, but ratio of water/grain/hops must remain the same
  • Brewer has freedom in the process (mash temp, hopping schedule, water profile, etc...)

Here are the required ingredients and amounts for a 5-gallon batch:

  • 8.5 lbs Viking Xtra Pale malt (1.9 SRM)
  • 8.0 oz honey malt (25.0 SRM)
  • 8.0 oz white wheat malt (2.4 SRM)
  • 4.0 oz caravienne 20L (Briess) (20.0 SRM)
  • 2.00 oz Hallertau Blanc hops [10.50 %]
  • 1.00 oz Cascade hops [5.50 %]
