CRABS Meeting July 17 at Heavy Seas Brewery

A good attendance for the meeting, especially considering the rain. A number of new people attended the meeting.

1) HomebrewCon in Providence, RI had a relatively large presence from CRABS members, as well as from other Maryland clubs. CRABS had 6 beers that were poured under the club name at the Social area and then under the Guild booth at Club Night. There was some dispute over who’s kegs kicked during the event, but all CRABS beers were well received.

2) MASHOUT will take place August 15-18 in western Maryland at a new location: 11828 Mason Rd NE, Cumberland MD. As usual, CRABS will have a large representation at the event. It is a great experience of beer, food, and camping.

  • After a vote, the CRABS camp food competition ingredient will be: Noodles

3) The 6th annual Hometown Brewdown will take place on Saturday September 7. Contact Rob K. at rmkst16@yahoo.com if you’d like to serve your beer (this will get you free admission). $25 advance, $30 at door if not bringing beer - will get you all you care to drink. Website is https://www.catonsvillecoop.com/calendar/2019/9/7/6th-annual-catonsville-cooperative-markets-hometown-brewdown

4) A CRABS only tour of Heavy Seas brewery to highlight recent changes will be arranged some evening, combining it with a happy hour at the tap room. Date TBD, stay tuned.

5) MD State Fair is having a homebrew competition. Free to enter, small cash prizes. Entries due at MDHB on Aug 19th, might be possible to drop off later at the fairgrounds.

6) Jailbreak Brewing will hold a homebrew contest on July 27. The style to brew: Cucumber Saison. See https://jailbreakbrewing.com/event/can-you-brew-q/ for details.

7) Union Mills Microbrewery Fest will be this Fall. Historically there was a home-brew competition run by Midnight Homebrewers, but they have given it up and there will be none this year. CRABS can consider picking it up for 2020.

8) MALT’s Turkey shoot will be in November, and MALT has said they no longer will be running it after this year. Another competition CRABS could consider coordinating.

9) No CRABS comp in August due to MASHOUT, but September will be a Hedonistic Competition (anything goes, but <9% and nothing wild, kettle sours okay) that Judy Neff, Checkerspot owner and long time CRABS member, will choose a beer to brew at Checkerspot.

10) Crabs4CRABS will be on Saturday September 14 at Guilford Park in Jessup. CRABS membership gets you free admission, $25 for guests. There will be lots of other food, like brisket, pork, and mac & cheese, in addition to crabs.

11) This month’s competition were English/Scottish ales. There were only 4 entries, brewed by CRABS old timers as younger members may have never seen an English Ale in the wild. Winners were:

  • 5th - none, only 4 beers
  • 4th - Brian England - Scottish Export
  • 3rd - Jeff (Hangin’ Tough) Adelsberger - Scottish 70
  • 2nd - Joe O’Keefe - ESB
  • 1st - Trevor Rose - Best Bitter

12) Next meeting: Wednesday August 21. No competition.
