2) The CRABS Food and Beer Competition will be this Saturday May 19 at Rob Kiernan’s house in Catonsville.  Pair with another CRABS member or your significant other.  The sign-up sheet, which includes the address, is at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rM_aOqWNkZuuyWT-HpX1HfpVH1-s4-5dvkQFI0nfJTs/edit?usp=sharing

3) It’s not too late to register for the 2018 HomebrewCon.Register at https://www.eiseverywhere.com/ereg/index.php?eventid=286196 .You *must* be an AHA member to register.Go to https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/ to join or login and check your membership expiration date.There is a Google spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y7EoWJwGmJvU7wAHoAQteHo8-uD-UY8jFpcjyEUazQg/edit#gid=0 where you can indicate the dates you’re going, where you’re staying, and whether you’re looking to share a room.This will give folks an opportunity to cut costs by pairing or tripling up.

4) The Guild summer picnic will be held Saturday June 2 at Patapsco State Park, Hollofield area, shelter 301, noon to dusk.  There will be a wheat beer competition as usual.  Cash prizes!  Must be present to win.  See Guild page http://www.mdhomebrewers.org/ for more info.

5) Two beer education classes are coming up.  Contact Les at lesbrews@gmail.com if you are interested:

  • June 3rd - Troubleshooting My Beer, $15.  Sample many common beer flaws (using the BJCP kit from Seibel Institute).  Discuss their possible causes and how to correct or reduce them.  You may bring samples of homebrew to get feedback.  At least 2 high-end, unflawed commercial beers will be served.

  • July 22nd - Recipe Formulation, $10.  Learn how to tweak ingredients/process to achieve results.  Calculate gravity, IBUs, and alcohol by hand.  Discuss ingredients and how minor changes can produce different results.  At least 4 classic examples of beer styles served, potential recipes discussed.  

7) Catonsville Co-op’s 5th annual Hometown Brewdown will be held on August 11.  Live music, food, and homebrew competition.  No event page yet but the co-op’s web page is https://www.catonsvillecoop.com/

8) MASHOUT will happen August 16-19 in Fort Royale PA (same location as last year).  See http://www.campmashout.com for more information.

9) The Maryland State Fair homebrew competition judging will be held on Friday August 24.  No entry fee.  Drop off entries at the fairgrounds August 21-22.  If we can get someone to gather and deliver entries from a local drop-off point, everyone will be notified.  The competition director will try to make this a BJCP competition so judges can get points; however, the event is not set up to take shipments.

10) Crabs4CRABS will occur on Saturday September 8.  Details forthcoming.

11) This month’s competition was malty lagers.  There were 10 entries.  Winners were:

  • 5th – Rob Farrell
  • 4th (tie) – Rob Kiernan
  • 4th (tie) – Joe O’Keefe
  • 3rd – Zach Keim
  • 2nd – Bob Mosier
  • 1st – Craig Szczesiul

12) Next meeting: Wednesday June 20.  Competition will be wheat beers.
