May 2020

1) 2020 dues are due to our new treasurer, Rob Kiernan.  $25 for individuals and $40 for families.

2) Most events have been cancelled due to COVID-19, including:

  • BJCP course (there was one class on March 8)
  • MALT’s bus trip (they might do one later in the year)
  • Guild summer picnic
  • BURP’s Spirit of Free Beer
  • FOAM’s Battle of the Bubbles
  • AHBC’s Pints for Paws
  • All BAM festivals
  • Howard County Fair homebrew competition
  • DC Brewers’ Cherry Blossom competition
  • Wootown’s Mead Day
  • HomebrewCon
  • National Homebrew Competition

3) While the Guild summer picnic has been cancelled, we still have Patapsco Park pavilion #300 from noon to dusk on Saturday May 30.  So, folks are welcome to show up and use it; it just won’t be an official Guild event.

4) We’d still like to do the CRABS food and beer pairing.  Due to the 10-person-or-fewer COVID-19 restriction, we cannot set a concrete date at this time.  We’re looking at Saturday June 28 but have to wait and see whether the restriction will be lifted by then.

5) MASHOUT is up in the air.  If it happens it will be on August 20-23 in western Maryland, same place as last year.  The website is campmashout.com but registration is not open yet.

6) We would like to have Crabs4CRABS in September.  The office that does pavilion reservations has been closed so we have not been able to reserve anything.

7) There might be a change in Guild leadership.  John Jester would like to step down as president.  He would like Ben Schwalb to take over the position, but since Ben is the Guild secretary, someone would have to take that position.  Rob Kiernan has indicated that he might be willing to become Guild secretary; if so, Ben would take the Guild president position.  The Guild has to go through its voting procedure before either of these changes could take place.

8) Some CRABS members have been working at Maryland Homebrew putting orders together for shipment and curbside pickup.

9) Next meeting: Wednesday June 17.  If we meet in person, we might do a competition, perhaps one of the styles we were supposed to do in March/April, but we haven’t decided.  If we can’t meet in person we will use Zoom again.

10) Go to http://crabsbrew.org for CRABS-related information.

11) See http://crabsbrew.org/Other_Competitions for a list of upcoming local homebrew competitions.  (At this point everything before August is cancelled.)
